2nd Semester

As the end of last semester, I was feeling more drawn to the drawings I had been doing then the paintings. After my presentation, I felt much better about exploring and continuing in this direction. Over break I worked on several more new drawings continuing to play with the ideas of enchantment. It was also suggested during my presentation that the drawings were very reminiscent of A Midsummer's Night Dream. I reread the play, which has always been one of my favorites, trying to think about the fusion of reality and fantasy and how this could apply to my work.

For this coming week, I want to finish the last two drawings and continue to make more thinking not only about what I'm drawing but also the marks that I am making with the pen, especially how the different types of mark making relate to each other.

  1. Lauren,

These drawings are great! You have a great sense of light in them. The chaos and density of some of the marks make it difficult to decipher the image at times, in a really intriguing way. How big are these? I would love to take a look at these in person this week. I think this is the first time I have seen you work in black and white. The lack of color seems to give you more control over the light as well as making it easier to generally understand what we are seeing without much detail. It seems that where the color in the paintings was making things confusing to understand for me, the marks are now doing that, but in a different, much more interesting way. I hope that makes sense. What are you liking/disliking about this way of work (pen vs paint, b&w vs color)?
I hope you had a fantastic break!
